Bucket List Item – Scuba diving?

On my bucket list I have "go scuba diving." I decided I want to scuba at Epcot DiveQuest when I go on vacation. I have a few questions.

~How long does it take to get a certificate?
~Also I wear glasses so can you wear them with your goggles on?
~How hard is it to scuba dive

The time it takes to complete a certification course varies depending on how the dive center or instructor wants to schedule the class. A common way to schedule the course is over two weekends with the first weekend consisting of classroom & pool training and the second weekend consisting of open water dives. However, the dive center may choose to run the class during evenings and spread it out over several weeks, or may try to accelerate it through self-study. The average course typically includes somewhere around 30 hours of instruction, with the more hours the better.

You cannot wear glasses under your mask. If you are nearsighted and your vision isn’t terrible without glasses you may be able to get by without any correction while diving since there is a slight magnifying effect that occurs when light passes from water into the air space inside your mask. Another option would be to wear contact lenses instead of glasses while diving. A third option would be to get corrective lenses installed onto the mask itself, which means you need to purchase the mask and have the lenses installed before starting the course.

Scuba diving is not hard, but you do have to learn a number of things including some basic physics and physiology in order to be a safe diver. You should also be comfortable being in & under water, and need to possess basic swimming skills. A lot depends upon you…some students are very comfortable and relaxed underwater from the start while others may struggle and find it stressful or scary. Most people fall somewhere in between.

Before you even start learning how to dive you must be free of certain health conditions that can make scuba too risky for you to do safely. Healthy respiratory, cardiovascular, and nervous systems are all necessary to avoid injury underwater so conditions like asthma, heart disease, or epilepsy could prohibit you from being a diver. Before starting any water training you will need to fill out a medical history form that will help identify any potential problems which require a medical exam and doctor’s approval before continuing.

We worked in that Club Med as Diving GO and Photo-Lab (underwater photographer). This is the 3rd version of the video made for weekly entertainment for our GM’s. The 80′s were great years for diving vacations with Club Med. The international team of great GO’s made the experience memorable to all! This film is dedicated to all ours friend GO and GM! Got2Dive joined Good Roll Model Inc. for the day at Weeki Wachee Springs. The cadets from SUNCOAST Squadron, USNSCC & USNLCC complete their last 2 certifying dives to become certified scuba divers! Weeki Wachee Springs pool is about 150 feet wide and 250 feet long. Water Temp is a constant 74 degrees year round. This is a 4th magnitude spring. This is a must to dive!! Thank You Good Roll Model, Inc. for the privilege to dive with you all!!

Scuba Diving Questions?

I’m 15 and would LOVE to dive along reefs. I have a few questions~
1- Do you have to take a course to scuba dive? Is it as ‘slow’ as driving lessons? I have an extremely strong period each month… and pills don’t have any effect. So, when the time came that I’d have to dive in the school, would I just have to suffer through it? Please explain the course I’d have to take.
2- How much does the course cost?
3- How much does the equipment cost, and how do you know what equipment is best?
4- I want to be able to just vacation to Australia and dive whenever I want to. I don’t want to dive alone… but also don’t want to go in a huge group?
5- How cold is the water?
6- Should I get my muscles up before attempting to dive?

1. It’s essential that you take a course to become qualified so that you know what you’re doing when you’re diving. Otherwise you could end up with a serious health situation. You could simply stop your course during your period. The course you take will depend on which organization teaches you, but should include classes to explain the theories relating to gases and their changes with depth and pressure as well as practicing various things in and under the water to ensure your safety.
2. Costs will vary depending on the provider. If the course is a short one, you’re likely to have to pay a lot more than one which is done over several weeks
3. Equipment can be quite expensive, but could be purchased over time.
4. I’m pleased that you realize the risks in diving alone. Huge groups would be a no-no for me too,but you’d be able to find a small group to go with.
5. The water temperature will vary according to where you want to dive and the season.
6. You don’t need to do any ‘muscle-building’ for scuba diving. All you need is to be a competent swimmer.

In this vid one of the manatees has a tag/beacon tracking transmitter. It was rescued because of an injury, given medical attention and fed, then released. Manatees are wonderful to snorkel and dive with!! They are so curious and friendly!! Divers went in the boil and were met by these two manatees at the end of the dive! AWESOME!
