What is the basic equipment needed for scuba diving?
I’m hoping to make scuba a new hobby.
Don’t worry about getting all new gear, you can rent everything when you get your stuff.
However, I would reccomend getting Mask, Snorkel, and Fins at the least. Also maybe look at a wetsuit and boots, depending on where and how often you’ll be diving in certian tempeatures.
After you get that stuff, I’d look at getting a Boyancy Compensator, weight belt, and regulator (containing first stage, second stage, octopus, BC hose, and depth/pressure gauge) in whichever order you can afford.
Always get your tank last, as it’s not that much more to rent one than to fill it up.
that’s all you need for basics, other gear that you can get include dive knives, lights, cameras, dive computers, and writing slates, and just about anything else you can think of. You don’t need any of that, but it’s always fun to have new toys.
Initially, I would go for mask, fins and snorkel, as they can be used for snorkelling if you decide scuba diving is not for you. You should go to classes, where you should be able to hire wetsuit or drysuit as appropriate, plus Buoyancy Compensation Device (BCD), weight belt, dive cylinder, hoses, Demand Valve (DV), knife, depth gauge, etc. These things can be quite expensive and you want to be sure you’re going to make good use of them before purchasing. Apart from the wetsuit or drysuit, thses additional items aren’t made to measure, whereas, you need a mask that fits your face and fins in the right size. With the latter, you need to decide between full-foot fins (if you’re going to be diving without wetsuit or drysuit boots) or adjustable fins if you’ll be wearing boots.

BC- buoyancy compensator
Regulator- what you breathe into
fins- make sure they fit when you are wearing your booties
boots- (wet suit material)goes into your fins
gloves- protect hands from sharp objects and warmth
hood- you lose most of your heat though your head, groin, and feet.
wet suit/ dry suit- different thicknesses depends on water temp.
mask- goes over face and nose
flash light- night diving
snorkel- when on surface of water you can save air
dive knife- never know what you might get tangled up in
computer/ charts- record you time and depths
weights- wetsuit will make you float
tank- has your air
