Full Foot Fins or Open Heel Fins?
I’ve started snorkeling and am looking into starting SCUBA diving. I haven’t bought fins yet and there are SOOO many to choose from. I live in South FL and was wondering if I should get the open fins with neoprene boots or the full foot ones. I need a pair that will work equally well for both SCUBA and Snorkel.
THANKS!!!
Well, I have two sets, both of which are open in the back. One is split fin and the other set is the hard plastic type. I prefer the open models because they adjust to whatever bootie I wear. I’ve been in the position where I’ve worn a light bootie and also a drysuit with thick socks underneath and the open back adjusts to either. Because you can adjust the strap, you’re less likely to lose them. That’s just my opinion.

It depends whether you are going to wear neoprene boots or not. If so, then you get fins with an adjustable strap. They are one size.
Alternatively, you get full foot fins and put them on your feet. You need to get the right size: they are usually sized the same as shoe sizes – check them out at a local supplier and try them on for size.
I have a pair of each. If I’m going somewhere where I don’t need to put neoprene boots on, then I’ll use the full-foot fins. Otherwise, I use the adjustable fins over my boots. Fins aren’t that expensive, so don’t worry about having 2 pairs.

For versatility, open heel. Simply because you have the option of diving cold if you wish. Cost wise, for the fins anyway, it’s pretty close for most brands and models. The added cost will of course, be the booties but you can always use those booties/ fins both in warm as well as cold water. You can also use those booties alone for other water activities, not related to scuba, like white water rafting or wind surfing, for example.I’ve never seen a diver use full foot fins in Tobermory , Ontario. That would be silly. We’d be amputating his blue/ black toes.
