..but I do believe that a novice diver should begin with basic paddle fins. Reasons? Underwater one should use arms to the minimum, and as I’d seen it many times: unexperienced divers who use split fins, tend to use their arms way too much to control their position – instead of using fins for that. Split fins, can be a real pain when you try to turn or pivot. Not impossible though, if you’re experienced and your technique is OK.
My advice: polish your skills with paddles, than try splits.

but seriously now… there’s much more to this! The one single thing, that you’ve pointed out is only true to some degree. I’ve used both types of fins, and my kicking style varies a lot depending on .. well, a lot of things: I appreciate the fact that split fins are so easy on your muscles (less chance of getting a cramp), but to me the manouverabilty of paddle fins is more important. Right now I use Aeris Velocity, which are sort of a compromise between split and paddle fin…
