I’m looking to move away from home when I finish high school in june. I’m 17, turning 18 in december. Would it be possible to travel somewhere nice, and get a masters in diving? I seen one job available in mexico, paying $50usd per day. Is that enough to get by there? I live in Canada so I’m used to rent being around $700 etc. I’d love to just drift and enjoy a couple years, before deciding to go to college or something. I have no idea what I want to do now… Any ideas?
You need to go to a dive shop to get your training and certifications. Most resorts would require that you be an instructor.
well yeah you could do that, if you enjoy scuba diving you could get a masters diving and go find a boat somewhere thats hiring. But if u dont already have a scuba masters then the courses youll be taking from PADI or whatever scuba place is in canada could add up and be really expensive. Id say your best bet would be to find a technical diving school and begin a technical diving career. Mexico has a huge demand for underwater welding right now.

If you’re looking to "drift" then getting certified and working Caribbean dive resorts would do that. But here’s the rub – you need a decent job first in order to pay for dive certification AND enough time in the water to credibly claim proficiency.
Sorry, chief. TANSTAAFL.
Yeah, you could do dive boat crew; but that requires experience, too, and you’re competing with the locals at that level.
Another option is to work as a professional diver. It’s definitely not drifting, though. The pay’s good, but it’s hard work.
