Taking the Plunge – Diving Holidays
What images spring to mind when you think of holidaying abroad? Many of us look forward to getting away from it all and relaxing on white sandy beaches, perhaps even have a dip in the crystal clear ocean.
However, there are those of us who enjoy exploring below the ocean waves as well as the abundance of sights and sands of the resorts we visit. If you’re looking to do a spot of shark spotting as well as sight seeing, there are a wide range of diving holidays available all over the world.
Whether you’re looking to spend your holiday living on a boat for a period of time or for a scuba day trip, diving holidays could be for you. There are many destinations around the world which have become famous for their dive sites – such as Sharm El Sheikh and the Great Barrier Reef – and offer the chance to experience crystal clear waters and a rich variety of wildlife that inhabit the coral reefs and shipwrecks.
And with a fluctuating financial market, many late deals are available, so whether you’re looking to explore the Andalucian coastline or for holidays in the Seychelles, you’re bound to find a deal to suit your dive. For those who feel a little more adventurous, there are also opportunities to participate in shark dives, which give divers the chance to view them through the bars of a cage.
Coral reefs are also ideal locations for those who have an interest in photography, with a rich variety of marine life inhabiting the nooks and crannies of the coral just waiting to be captured on film. Before you embark on diving holidays, it’s important to have an idea of what it may entail.
Whilst many tours will offer short training courses for first-time divers, more experienced scuba enthusiasts have the opportunity to dive at their leisure. Expeditions are often led by a ‘divemaster’, who offer experience and assistance during your dive.
If taking the plunge isn’t quite your cup of tea but you want to experience the beauty of the deep, many coastal resorts will also offer snorkelling trips, giving you the chance to appreciate the ocean without diving too far down.

Do traditional gender roles still persist in the UK or do girls & boys behave pretty much alike?
A 16-year-old Albanian girl broke with tradition by retrieving a cross from the bottom of a wintry Ionian Sea ahead of a dozen boys and men diving for it as part of a male-only Orthodox ceremony.
Katerina Munguli plunged several metres to pick up the metal cross on Wednesday to the surprise and delight of the crowd and the priests near the pier of Kakome Bay, which faces Greece’s holiday island of Corfu, an official said.
"It was a cold day and she competed with several boys and men. The cross was metallic and it went down to the bottom, quite several metres down," Vladimir Kumi, the chairman of the local council, who co-organized the ceremony, said by telephone.
Diving for the cross is done in several Orthodox countries to mark Theophany, also known as Epiphany, a Christian feast day in January. In Greece, women began to take part several years ago, but in Albania, Munguli was the first female reported to have joined in.
In Albanian cities, traditional gender roles are changing, but in the countryside women are largely confined to domestic tasks.

Edit: Exactly Sukie…here in India too…in many cases, even the most modern working woman breaking stereotypes at work will return home to cook & clean while the man of house…watches TV. x

Where I live the girls fight and drink like the boys.

I would say yes. From the moment we are born we are treated differently, girls dressed in pink and boys in blue.

Big business is trying it´s hardest to perpetuate gender roles in kids.
Everytime I visit toys r us and I see that section of pink glittery crap aimed at little girls it makes me want to cry.

Traditional gender stereotypes do still exist. However, there is much more freedom for girls or boys to participate in activities that oppose the norm.
It’s a good thing to see such freedom. Women are often seen in senior positions now, where only men may have been acceptable once. Men can stay at home and raise children while their wives earn the income.
I would hope young people are proud of who they are and not have girls feel compelled to be more masculine. They can achieve their aims without sacrificing who they are

Things like that are fair game. Until the age of 13 you could barely tell me apart from a boy, I climbed trees, played footie and ran and it was easy to keep up with the boys…as the body matures though I think bone density becomes higher in men and we grow differently so even though i might be able to make myself fit enough to take on a male challenge it wouldn’t be natural for my fitness to be the same. Good for that girl…I think grit and determination won that race 🙂

I think it sometimes it depends on your family and upbringing. In my family the men still do all the hard graft and women stick to domestic chores. Doesn’t work for everyone but my family are happy enough.
