What is the best scuba equipment to buy?

I was thinking of getting into scuba diving and was wondering what the best bang for your buck was in scuba equipment (i.e. good quality for relatively cheap price) with spear guns also.
Thanks.
Your going to get "xxx is the best". Everyone has their personal favorites.
The best gear the what you can have serviced locally. Sending your gear out via mail or UPS is kinda scary.
My personal favorite is the Aqualung brand, though. 🙂
you will need flippers, the suit, and the mask. U can get them at Wal-Mart for a low price or Big 5, which is really good in quality, but quite expensive.

SCUBA equipment and cheap price do not go together. You get what you pay for in this industry.
Scubapro is probably the most expensive, but high quality.
Dacor and U.S. Divers are a bit less expensive, but still good quality gear.
With respect to regulators, the above holds. BC’s I would not look too much at price, but comfort and ease of use. The big factor with me is as streamline as possible. You need to propel yourself through the water. The smaller your frontal surface area, the easier you will swim through less displacement of water required to move your body through the water.
Wetsuits are dependent upon how cold the average water temp. you plan on diving and your body shape. Some people can fit properly in standard sizes, some can get by with standard sizes with a few adjustments and some go for custom built suits for their body.
Other equipment vary too much to get into detail. Keep fit and streamline in mind with all equipment. What you will find is most divers have a mishmash of brand names on their body as manufacturers tend to specialize in certain products or have good quality in some products and less desirable attributes in others. For example, you may like the price/quality balance from a Dacor regulator, but be more impressed with the streamlining and ease of use in a Scubapro BC. Or vice versa. Tanks are more generic. It has more to do with how much volume you can carry on your frame. I hate aluminum tanks because they tend to float @ss up as the air diminishes. I used to tape a 3lb weight at the base of mine to counteract this issue. Aluminum tanks are cheap, abundant and less maintenance because they do not rust.
I have all steel tanks of various sizes from a steel 50 to a steel 90. Most are not made anymore.

I would recommend looking at Sherwood for regulators. They are not the best but they are cheap and durable. The Sherwood Brut is one of the most popular rental regulators. There also isn’t all that much difference between different brands of wetsuits. The more expensive ones might last longer and be more comfortable, but they should keep you just as warm. Other than that you get what you pay for.
