Homemade Scuba Gear
This is some home-made scuba gear me and my friend put together summer of ’06.
The main air tank is actually a garden sprayer, and holds about 8 liters (2 gallons) of air compressed at 40psi. The tank is encased in concrete to make it neutrally boyant. The tubes across my chest are filled with rocks, and help neutralize our bouyancy. This design allows us to dive for 2 minutes straight, 10 or 11 feet underwater. This whole setup cost us about $55.
We now have much better scuba gear, with a 10 gallon tank that can hold 80psi. It allows us to dive for 15 minutes straight at a depth of 10 or 11 feet. The new setup cost about $60.
Keep in mind that this is very dangerous, and should not be attempted by anyone without proper scuba training (like us). I am not responsible in any way for any injuries you may sustain emulating something in this video. To put it simply, do not try this at home. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Decompression sickness after 15 min @ 10 feets – impossible
However without proper training, if you run out of air – barotrauma is what awaits you on the surface (and it’s not gonna be pleasant)

@xm4tr1x xmilkman can correct me if i’m wrong but it looks to me like they used a pump style chemical sprayer in their design. No motor driven compressor involved. hopefully no chemicals either 😉 Clever!
@dedch1 I’m quite …
@dedch1 I’m quite certain they won’t be hitting their NDL’s with 2 minute dives. If anything the sawtooth dive profile would be the cause of issues but even still I think that is very slim. If they were to get to any depth than their bottom time would diminish rapidly enough as the ATM pressure increased that there still wouldn’t be any on gassing. Just my two cents.
Lipoid Pneumonia. …
Lipoid Pneumonia. Look it up. Making your own SCUBA gear, especially the way you have designed it, CAN and WILL kill you! Even if that tank is a basic hand pump pressurized chemical spray tank, oils and lubricants exist to keep it working smoothly. Those oils vaporize under pressure and enter the bronchial passages and damage the lungs. SCUBA air is cleaned, filtered, and processed to remove impurities. You are playing with danger and will likely end up dead or seriously ill if you continue.

Well, resourceful anyway…maybe should have done up some homemade fins first though!

at least they’re using a pool. could be dangerous otherwise
and DiverSixx is totally right, holding your breath while scuba diving is really stupid. thats a good way to blow up a lung

where did you find a ten gallon tank that you can strap on your back?
Its not a bad …
Its not a bad concept. As long as you are certified (as you guys mentioned you are) you have the basic skills to react in an emergency. Even with name brand gear, most accidents are a result of user error. Stayin above 15′ and you will be okay. I actually like this idea and may give it a shot for my own sake (I too am certified). Be safe and have fun!

You would last an hour at 60 feet.
If you know how to breath right, you can stay at 10 feet for a few hours.

good point.. although a regular tank and a regulator won’t last you 4 hours at 10 feet… maybe 1 hour or a little more 😛

I have scuba gear, that allows me to stay under water at 10 feet for over 4 hours!
It’s called a scuba tank and regulator.
Go get certified

DIY SCUBA, Nice, But at least learn the basic how not to Die. Like, if you were to run out of AIR on the bottom” YOU CAN NOT HOLD YOUR BREATH TO COME TO THE SURFACE!’ Type lung overexpansion into your browser. Good luck!
You can’t go and …
You can’t go and buy a full set of scuba gear and fill tanks with the knowledge of physics and/or chem – it’s a regulated industry, paying the $500 makes life a lot easier than trying to argue the point that you’re more educated than they are..
Good for you! I’m a …
Good for you! I’m a long time scuba diver and disagree with those that go nuts and tell you you’re crazy to do this. My advise is: 1) breathe – never hold your breath, especially when ascending, 2) Don’t go below 30′. Hey, fun stuff is sometimes dangerous. Getting certified doesn’t guarantee safety. Just be aware that the chances of equipment failure is FAR more likely with this home made stuff and act accordingly.

I built one myself, its called Homebuilt Scuba. It goes through the steps on how to make it. Its alot of fun!

I just bought my setup tonight, and it did come to about fifty dollars. This is how my setup goes… First off I grabbed a 2 Gal. sprayer tank rated at 65psi. I then got some high pressure line and a pneumatic tool pressure regulator to bring it down from 65psi to around 20psi. I’m in the process of building it. I plan to make a nice detailed video with a test run and post it for further improvements!! If anyone has ideas post!
ive been wanting to …
ive been wanting to make some homemade scuba gear for a while ive tried many ways. this is great for diving less than 15 ft but anything else u definitely need proper gear i can honestly see why this would cool cuz u can have just as much fun diving in 10 ft of water compared to 100 ft. and yes its very expensive to dive properly u can get certified for under 300 400 dollars and rent gear but to actually but gear costs thousands of dollars.
I think for some people like me that getting certified is a joke, ive used proper gear for years and dive in my personal lake all the time, if i were diving about 100 foot id got get the cert and prop equiptment,, HOWEVER i used an old oxygen tank and a oiless compressor to fill for yrs… I know about the saftey and procedures as well as any of you guys, I know how i just dont have the cash to dump on some peice of card that says im certified, certified does NOT mean you know how, just means you have alot of money. I dive local creek and pools here to find blacksand and pan gold. its a hobby that takes me to beautiful mountain areas with about 5 to 10 ft depth max.. My reg is a air drill regulator with braided sink hoses. was free for me to build and provides about 30 min of air going up and down with buckets of black mud. SO i think this is a great idea and very novel in theory. Ive dived in cold springs to around 125 ft with proper gear and have had emergencys and reacted with care and calm actions. ive never enven had a close call, just used buddy system with double hoses. i know about all the decomp and lung burst warnings so get off the soap box and dont preach to me. Like i said, this type of nevelty has its place, playing in pools or creeks at very shallow depth. no danger of da benz(spelling?) its more of a tool to allow me to get full buckets of mud instead of half buckets and tring to swim up with em, i just walk 10ft to the left back to shore. Good luck guys, hope everyone is safe and has fun! happy swims yall!
