Scuba diving GoPro HD in Cape Verde
To my subscribers : obviously this video is not about airsoft, but scuba diving, which is one of my other hobby (because yes, unlike popular belief, my whole life does not turn around airsoft only). I’m a CMAS ** diver (plongeur niveau II in french).
Therefore you may not be interested in this video, which is indeed very long and, I have to say, pretty boring. I guess. I like the video, it makes a nice souvenir to me, but I guess it’s a bit slow and long ^^
I’ve been diving in Cape Verde during the first half of september. Cape Verde is an island country, spanning an archipelago of 10 islands located in the central Atlantic Ocean, 570 kilometres off the coast of Western Africa (thank you Wikipedia). On this particular dive, I was in Santa Maria, the major city of Sal, the island in the north east of Cape Verde.
There is 2 points for this video :
– To show a nice wreck dive in a nice dive spot in Cape Verde.
– To show the performances of an “out of the box” HD GoPro camera under water. I’m using nothing but the camera, the waterproof case and the head bang. I have not buy any other accessorie. The camera is placed on my front head, just on the top of my diving mask (you can see me putting off my mask at the end of the video).
As you can see the image is very blue, and a bit blurred. But honestly I’m very surprised, I think the image is really not that bad. The maximum depth of the diving was 38 meters.
I’m using the R4 mode in this video, which provides the largest and widest view. Which explains the black bars on the left and on the right of the video.

@snakedoctor07 In reality sharks are really only dangerous for surfers, because sharks think they’re turtles.

@legitnessProductions Well I do own fins, but I don’t remember the brand. I don’t use them in this video (I didn’t take them with me on the trip).

What fins do u use? I use mares volo powers and there amazing 🙂
The reason the …
The reason the picture appears blue is because the colour red has a very short wavelength and any nature hue of red is virtually imperceptible below 16ft. As far as how legitimate this answer is, I am a certified underwater photographer and an advanced open water diver

You should do more of these videos, I really liked it.

i watched to 12min and i gotta say as a fellow diver, that looks really really tough.
the stream was really stong one side of the boat.
and not to be an but it looked like you where having some trouble with your BCD.
just for a next time tip:
when the stream is strong you should go down to the bottom and crawl/swim close to the bottom it will help alot.

@MitchellWadeHarris …
@MitchellWadeHarris Sure it will be blue underwater, I understand that. But on a pro camera it won’t be that obvious, because it will balance it (“take” more red, less green and blue). Red gets attenuated more, but it doesn’t mean it’s not present. With good camera that has a proper sensor you will be able to get some reds. With go pro my red channel is almost non-existent at 20m (visibility around 30m). It’s a toy. Works quite good on land, but I do not recommend it for underwater footage.
@anothershakey Okay …
@anothershakey Okay, I’ll try that next time I open up my pool thanks 😀
@anothershakey Not …
@anothershakey Not sure about the white balance but the blue-ness is due to the fact that water absorbs other wavelengths of light before blue. Meaning: the deeper you go, the blue-er it gets. A little post production tweaking ought to clean that up enough to justify using a go pro in my opinion.
damn. gopro’s suck …
damn. gopro’s suck underwater. no reds, white balance is well off; oh — get flat lens for the camera, it helps with the blur. but still, I get really blue pictures 🙁
Nikon N7000 + underwater housing is my plan, but these pro housings cost 1500 USD / 1200 GBP 🙁
@TheShadoKnite it …
@TheShadoKnite it doesn’t hurt at all; as long as you equalize; your body is mostly water, so you won’t feel any pressure changes. you only feel them in places where there’s air — so between your nose and ears, and lungs — but lungs just get the air at ambient pressure thanks to the regulator; so the magic is called equalization — you pinch your nose and blow against it gently. it’s hard for the first time, took me good 15 minutes to get down to 5 metres (!!!) but it gets very easy with time!

im deciding between getting a contour $130 or a gopro around $300. I really want the contour because its cheaper and more options to secure it with. Opinions?

@OnCameraWeirdos I forgot them in France, actually.
Thanks for sharing this video, it is interesting to see what the camera is capable of.
From someone who has lived and dived in CV for a long time I want to tell you that you are correct about the wreck being seized by the port authority for carrying illegal immigrants. The name of the ship is the Kwarcit (it is Russian) but the depth is only 28m not 38m at the very bottom, the deck is around 18m. Manta Dive Center were responsible for sinking this ship as they have a programme of creating artificial reefs around Sal (for your diving pleasure as well as for research) – no other dive centres participated sadly.
