Scuba Diving?
I was recently in Florida and I went snorkeling. The boat that I was on had about 5 people out of the 20 scuba diving. While snorkeling, I could hold my breath long enough to get down until the pressure got to me. It was beautiful. I live in New York and I am very interested in scuba diving. Can I have some information on Scuba Diving (certifications, equipment, places to go, etc.) please? 🙂
I’ve only done this once before, but if you want to try it before you get certified, most scuba/snorkel companies will offer some sort of a beginner dive once they teach you the basics. You don’t need a license for this. If fact, you need to do this in order to get certified anyway. They provide the equipment if your doing this.
I went scuba diving in St. Barths, and what a view that was. Anywhere in the Carribian is great. If you have the money, go for it.
They teach you to breath in a consistent pattern (basically to not stop breathing), what some basic hand signals mean, how to fill and release air in your air vest (don’t know the exact name), and how to make yourself pressurized to the depth you go to. They also tell you what everything is for and such.
I know i’m missing some little stuff but this is what you would expect to start scuba diving.

To scuba dive you just need to be in good health,over 10 (if you’re in the ocean) and comfortable being in the water. Unless of course you are planning on becoming a scuba diving instructor, then you need to know a lot more! To learn how to do the basics and recieve a PADI SCUBA Diver certification takes 2 days.
I don’t know where you could dive for where you are, but if you ever get to Australia The Great Barrier Reef is a must!

The minimum equipment that you will need to invest in to start diving is a mask, snorkel, and fins. The rest of the gear is usually provided (or can be rented) when you take your certification class(es.) You may also want to invest in an exposure suit (ie. wet suit, dry suit, etc. — the type depends on the conditions you plan on diving.)
Whether you dive locally or travel to exotic locations, a majority of dive resorts and centers/shops will rent the additional gear that you will need, which is economical and convenient and it makes traveling a lot easier.
Buying all your own equipment can get expensive and if you do not dive that often, IMHO is not a financially sound decision.

There are many scuba schools available but the most recognized around the world for recreational diving is PADI. Depending on your budget and your interest there are several courses you could take.
If you only want to try scuba diving you can take a Discover Scuba Diving course where they give you a quick but thorough description on what are the most important aspects of diving. And of course, they take you out for a dive.
There’s the PADI Scuba Diver certificate where you are only certified to dive with a Divemaster or Instructor.
Finally the Open Water in which you take a detailed course and learn about the theory and do useful exercises underwater.
These are all beginner classes. You could start with any of these. And I can assure you it’s extremely fun!
Now PADI has a program where you can take the theory online from where you are and then take the diving sections on some tropical island. That way you don’t have to take the whole course while on vacation and simply do your intended dives.
As mentioned earlier, the basic equipment you’ll need is a mask, snorkel and fins. And perhaps a wetsuit.

Scuba diving is amazing! I only started 2 years ago but it is the first thing i want to do wherever i go in the world.
You will be able to do ‘try dives’ with any scuba diving company, just to make sure you like it.
Next step is to get qualified, it is better to do the training in a resort where conditions will be good (you can do most of the theory at home before you go to any resort to save you sitting in a classroom all day). The 2 main bodies for qualifications are:

there are a lot of dive shops out there ask for reerences, and chose a shop that you feel comfortable with, there are several certification agencies and prices do vary. open water is entry level,next is advanced open water, and so on depending how involved you want to get. you didnt say what area of ny. if you are in the nyc metro area there is a very good dive shop i use in little ferry nj.
