Snorkelers and scuba divers?
A few questions:
-My sis and dad keep arguing over stiff fins or flexible fins as being better. Is there really a difference or is it just personal preferrence? I’ve been happy with my US Divers flexible ones, but should I consider going stiff finned?
-What do you think about the fins that have holes in them? When I first saw these, I thought it was a joke and that it would increase drag, but they seem to be booming on the market.
-What brands do you use? What brands do you like/prefer or would want if price didn’t matter?
-What are some of your favorite dive sites? I prefer snorkel because it’s cheaper and easier to move in the water. The Caymen Islands has been my favorite place for diving so far, but I’m going to Hawaii in a few days, so it may change.
-What can I do about fins that are a little too big? They are shoe style (no strap) and stay on ok, but I almost lost them to a big wave once(Yeah I made the mistake of judging the size in the store). I want to lose the extra space.
Hey, if you’re happy with your fins then those are the right ones for you! I don’t personally like vented fins, I like a good stiff blade like the tusa tri-ex, but that’s just me. I live if Florida and really like the diving off of Jupiter. You can get rid of the extra space in you fins by wearing neoprene socks beneath them. Hopefully that covered everything.
This is a matter of personal taste. When I was working as a divemaster I had different pare of fins for my dives and my snorkel trips. For my dives I used a pair of Cressi Sub Frogs and for snorkeling a pair of Tuse Imprex. The frogs are more rigid and gave me better propulsion, especially since I hardly use a regular kick I normaly do a frog kick. As far as the type of fins, full finned vs split fins is a matter of preference and kick style. My wife uses split fins wich give her better propulsiuon with a regular kick, again they dont work for me since most of the time I use a frog kick. As far as fool foot vs open heel fins, I hate fool foot fins, some people love them but generally speaking most divers prefer open heel fins, because they fit better, are asier to put on and take off, especially in climbing a boat ladder in a hurry. LOL.
So my friend the best fins for you are the ones that you feel comfortable using, and fit your particular style. If they are uncmfortable you wont use them so comfort is very important.

I used to own a pair of enormous jet fins – they were really hard work, I now have a pair of Mares fins and they are great, but it is down to the individual as with most equipment.
I loved the diving in Scotland, Malta used to be good – Wreck diving in Gibralter and the diving off Holetown in Barbados was great. I am going to Grand Cayman, Cozumel and Belize in December so looking forward to that.
