Purchasing Scuba Gear for the First Time
I’ve been scuba diving for over 25 years now and now I sell scuba gizmos at ScubaBasics.com. I need to clarify this so the article doesn’t lose its message. Yes, not only I sell Scuba Equipments I also passionately follow diving.
Since diving is becoming popular in the main stream of society, beginner divers struggle with how to purchase their first rig of scuba gear. I desire to share my thoughts about it. You are about to get scuba equipment that will sustain your life while you are deep in water. Do NOT buy or use scuba diving rig that has not been serviced or reviewed by a accredited individual. It is not worth gambling with your life to save some dollar. Please do not take this statement lightly.
You can get overwhelmed when purchasing scuba gear for the first time, especially when there are so many selections to choose from. You can get distracted from what is really important when purchasing your scuba kit. Haven’t you seen this before. A new diving enthusiast enters the diving store and stares at the wall of Mask, Snorkel and fins and their eyes kind of glaze over.
The truth is, getting scuba gadgets is not that difficult if you stay focused on what’s needed. You need to remember that no matter what other divers say, it is your equipment and it needs to perform for your style of diving. Don’t allow your purchase be determined by trivial things like color availability. I guarantee the fish really don’t care if you are color coordinated or not.
In this series of articles, I’ll challenge you to concentrate on how you will use your equipment and stay focused on what’s important to achieve a safe and enjoyable dive.

Why do some people buy such expensive scuba gear when all you really need it the basic gear?
I am a casual diver I purchased all of my equipment for under $500.00 I have seen some people new to diving spend upwards of $1500.00
when i see a guy wearing a $2000 suit i think wow that guy got ripped
Some people drive Mercedes Benz’. I drive a beat up 1984 Datsun truck which I bought for $500.

This is because on one end people love showing up to dive spots with thier expensive gear. Just like people get a thrill out of showing up to work or school in thier BMW. They feel so good showing off thier wealth… even though it actually makes them look stupid for wasting money!
On the other end, many people tend to still have this belief that if it costs more then it is better, and when considering scuba gear some people feel as if the cheap stuff will get you killed. On the contrary, I have two primary regs: one cost $120(Oceanic) and was the cheapest I could find and the other cost around $250 (DiveRite). The one that is currently broken is the more expensive one, and my cheap one has been flawless. My dive buddy also has a lot of problems with his more expensive set up.
I do believe that people should buy new dive gear as it is something that CAN be really dangerous if you buy it used (you don’t really know what your buying unless its inspected).

I too am a certified diver and I know exactly what you mean. It’s funny when you see people new to the sport and they are wearing suits you don’t plan to have for years to come. A lot of the time this equipment is to sophisticated for them and it’s harder to use than the basic package! It’s all about showing off, pretty stilly if you ask me.
